VISTA DEL MONTE

A sweeping panorama of the Pacific Ocean, Santa Monica Bay, Channel Islands, and DTLA provided the setting and impetus to suspend a sixty-foot swimming pool over a steep coastal hillside. By pushing the pool outward to its absolute limit, a breathtaking vista was simultaneously created which lures garden visitors to wander 'close to the edge' and experience the spectacular 180-degree view. This garden is a series of terraces, stairways, and usable spaces which descend gently down the property.

An upper terrace near the house floats above a slope of Red Fescue and Agaves. A stone stairway leads guests downward to a spacious patio furnished with sectional sofas and a modern fire table. A large grass area and the pool await below, suitable for lawn bowling or swimming. The grounds also feature massive indigenous boulders, a collection of garden sculpture, a sunning deck, an outdoor shower carved into the hillside, and drought-tolerant seaside plantings that blend seamlessly into the windswept natural landscape.

This garden’s overall aesthetic is a stunning blend of modern design and natural beauty, perfectly suited

to its dramatic coastal setting.
